Schizophrenia: Types, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Phenothiazines + Antacids

  • Antacids significantly decrease CPZ (for example) blood level & urinary excretion. Allow at least 2 hrs between administration of both drugs.

Phenothiazines/Butyrophenones + Levodopa

  • Therapeutic response of levodopa is inhibited by dopamine receptor blockade of the antipsychotic agents. The use of antipsychotics in parkinsonism should be avoided.

 Phenothiazines/Butyrophenones + Benztropine/Trihexphenidyl

  • Prophylactic use of both agents may return the patient to previous psychotic stage. Avoid prophylactic use of antiparkinsonian agents in patients receiving antipsychotic drugs.

Phenothiazines + amphetamines/chlorphentermine/phenmetrazine/ methylphenidate

  • Anorexigenic effects are inhibited. These CNS stimulants may aggravate schizophrenic symptoms. Phenothiazines inhibit central effects of CNS stimulants. No legitimate indication for simultaneous utilization of these two classes of drugs
