Description and Composition of Klovinal

Klovinal Pessary is a formulation specially made for the treatment of mixed vaginal infections.

It is a combination of different drugs and each Pessary contains the following active ingredients:

  1. Metronidazole BP 500 mg
  2. Clotrimazole BP 100mg
  3. Lactobacillus Spores 150 millions

In addition to the above listed active ingredients, Klovinal pessary contains inactive ingredients called excipients in sufficient quantities.

Klovinal pessary is white to off white bullet shaped Pessaries. The bullet shape allows for easy insert into the vagina of both virgins and those who are sexually active.

Pharmacodynamics of klovinal pessaries

1. Clotrimazole

Clotrimazole is a broad spectrum antifungal agent available for topical or Intravaginal use. It is active against yeast and dermatophytes and also some action against Gram +ve bacteria, especially Staphylococci and against Trichomonas.

Clotrimazole acts by altering the permeability of fungal cell walls by interfering with cell wall lipids.

2. Metronidazole

Metronidazole is active against several protozoa including Trichomonas Vaginalis. It is bactericidal.

It is used in the treatment of susceptible protozoal infections and in the treatment and prophylaxis of anaerobic infections.

Specific bacterial infections treated with Metronidazole include bacterial vaginosis (nonspecific vaginitis).

3. Lactobacillus Spores

The vagina is dynamic ecosystem that normally contains approximately 10 bacterial colony forming units per gram of vaginal fluid.

The normal bacterial flora is dominated by Lactobacilli. Lactic acids and other organic acids are metabolized from glycogen by the lactobacilli, maintaining the vaginal pH between 3.8 and 4.2.

The acidic enviroment inhibits the overgrowth of bacteria and other organisms with pathogenic potential.

Because of vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis and vulvovaginal candidiasis, the Lactobacilli flora goes down and vaginal pH Increases to more than 4.5.

Because of anaerobic bacteria, musty or fishy odour starts.

Lactobacillus is in spore form. It is used to recolonize the vaginal flora and to maintain the vaginal pH between 3.8 to 4.2.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied topically Clotrimazole penetrates the epidermis but there is little if any systemic absorption has been reported following vaginal administration.

Absorption of Metronidazole from vaginal Pessaries has been reported to be poor. Lactobacillus sporogenes recolonize the vaginal flora.

Indications and Uses of Klovinal Pessary

Klovinal Pessary is indicated for the treatment of vaginal infections like trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Dosage of Klovinal Pessary

One Klovinal Pessary should be inserted into the vagina as deeply as possible once daily. It should be used for 6 days, preferably on retiring to bed at night.

Can Klovinal Pessary Be Used During Period (Menstruation)

Klovinal or any other pessaries should not be used during menstrual period due to the risk of the pessary being washed out by the menstrual flow.

Meanwhile, in a situation where you are already using it before your menstrual period started, switch to an oral treatment if available or continue with the Klovinal Pessary until you complete it as prescribed by your doctor.

When in doubt, always consult your healthcare provider.

Can a virgin use Klovinal Pessary

Virgins can use it and any other pessaries. They should carefully insert it through small openings in their vaginas.

Can Klovinal prevent pregnancy

Klovinal pessary is used for the treatment of vaginal infections like trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis.

It does not prevent pregnancy. None of its components has a contraceptive effect.

To prevent pregnancy, please use any standard contraceptive method. This includes pills, implants, condoms etc.

It does not hurt when inserted. Although, it has the following side effects in some persons:

  • Mild burning sensation, irritation, stinging to vaginal area
  • Local pruritus

Is Klovinal good for yeast infection?

Klovinal is good for the treatment of yeast infection. Yeast infection is also known as Vulvo-Vaginal Candidiasis.

Klovinal is used for its treatment because it contains an antifungal drug called clotrimazole as one of its components (active ingredients).

In addition to its use for yeast infection treatment, Klovinal also helps in preventing recurrent yeast infection.

This is made possible by one of its components called lactobacillus spores.

Contraindications: when is Klovinal not to be used?

Klovinal Pessary is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to topical imidazoles and any of its ingredients.

Warning and Precautions

If irritation or sensitivity developes with the use of Klovinal Pessary, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.

If there is lack of response to Klovinal Pessary treatment, microbiological studies should be done to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other pathogens before instituting other course of antimycolytic therapy.

Pregnancy and lactation

Is Klovinal Pessary safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding women? Can it be used by these women without issues to their babies?

Klovinal pessary should only be given to pregnant or lactating women if benefits of its use in them outweigh the possible risk to the fetus.

Antibiotics with activity against lactobacilli should be avoided.

Antibiotics containing metronidazole, and clotrimazole should be avoided equally.

Side effects of Klovinal pessary

How to use Klovinal Pessaries

  1. Wash your hands
  2. Do not open pessary if it seems soft, hold the foil wrapper under cold water or place it in refrigerator for few minutes to harden it before removing the wrapper
  3. Remove one pessary from the strip and hold it in fingertips
  4. Remove any foil or plastic wrapping stuck to the pessary.
  5. Sit or lie down with your knees bent and legs apart.
  6. Gently insert the pessary into the vagina as far as comfortably possible using your fingers.
  7. Wash your hands again.

    It is normal to have a leak after insertion. Even if some of the product come out, the active ingredients should still be working inside the vagina. I suggest you wear a panty liner to avoid staining your underwear.

  55. Hi,I want to drop few tips& my experience incase it might help anyone who didn’t get a reply here yet..
    I noticed whitish discharge frm my virgina & it’s itchy all even tho it doesn’t stink I still wasn’t comfortable..My bf helped complained to a pharmacist & prescribed me this drug….I was skeptical at first but the pain I was going through made me use it eventually!
    The first night after inserting,my virgina was like burning hell,burns & stings ,I had to turn on fan I lay down for close to an hour before it stopped.Sincerely I vowed not to use it again cos I used Boric acids on a norms & it wasn’t like that!
    Apparently it was like because I have an active infection as I was also feeling itchy before,which made it reacted dat way which I think is normal cos i think it’s like applying drugs to an open wound…
    So by day break the itch & stinger was all gone…Knowing how my body usually reacts to new things I decided to give it a try again the following day to see if there would be difference.
    The second time didn’t hurt as much & by the 3rd day it didn’t even itch or sting no more….The drug is indeed effective as I even saw a change in cum after sex(it’s was like white silky slime)no odor during or after sex …The itch & burning was the only side effect I had BUT a friend of mine tried it & notice little blood spotting after using it,Whc later stopped before she finished the whole dosage…
    Anyway as Women we have a different & our body reacts to thing most especially drugs differently,you just have to get used to it or find what what works for you…
    So there the tips that helped me..
    * Pee/defecate/shower first,most especially Pee!
    * Get an applicator if u find it hard use your to properly fit it inside(it’s shaped to help insert easily & it does not hurt using ur hand)
    * Clear your schedule & make sure that you won’t be walking around or standing up after inserting the pessary.
    * Get a panty Liner & have it fixed in ur panties before u insert the drug.
    *I’ll advice to clean ur virgina & dab dry with clean/soft or feminine wipes linen so as to feel clean &comforble…(pls just the outer part of ur labia & pussylips,do not put inside your Virgina)
    *Find a very comfortable position u can sit or lay down to insert the pessary most especially if you’re using ur hand..I personally bend halfway down like I’m gonna sit,place a mirror on the floor so as avoid smudging the shape or having it all over my labia..I do this on d floor or on my bad at times…
    * Once I insert it I will lay on my bed. Spread my legs & then push further,im curvy so its a challenge on its own hence why ur body will determine which position u choose….
    *After inserting I make sure I lay there in that position for Atleast 30mins the I’ll quickly put on my panties & then go back to that position,
    I’ll advise the laying down (like in missionary style) with ur legs open so as not to squeeze out anything especially after it’s dissolved,YOU can stylishy switch side too…SO even if u didn’t get to push it properly Atleast it’ll be goin in & too much won’t leak out..
    * Try avoiding coughing or too much laughter during this period (we all knw how dat is during our period lol)
    * Just try this for 1/2hrs if u still wanna get up to do stuff..Which why it is advisable to use it when going to bed..
    *Lastly once you’re settled in,wash your hand.

I looked up some symptoms online and I saw I have yeast infection, after taking the right prescriptions I saw changes and I thought it was gone, although I tried to take klovinal with my pills, I’m a virgin so I didn’t know what to expect fitting it in, I wasted two that night because I didn’t open one rightly and the second time trying to fit the other one, it gave me this burning sensation and I couldn’t bare it so I threw it aware out of anxiety. (This was last week, and today was a few days after I finished taking all my medications)
    Now today I noticed I still had little discharge barely noticeable but the smell was still there in a way
    I finally inserted the klovinal pill after so much struggle and pains but I noticed some melted around the entrance of my vagina. Would it still work efficiently?
    I still have three more that I can use, next time should I try forcing it in more?, I use my fingers by the way. And will it be enough? Should I still take some antibiotics I have left the the klovinal?(the doctor actually said I should use klovinal with the prescribed drugs but I saw as a warning not to use klovinal while menstruating and my period was coming in a few days time then so I didn’t use it untill I was done)
